The Garden of the Hesperides by Sir Edward Burne-Jones

I am alone in a room and hear a noise. I discover a large snake. As usual, I run and the snake chases me, and, as usual, I try to scream but nothing comes out.

Though often associated with sex (thanks Sigmund), snakes are an ancient symbol of wisdom, rebirth, healing and regeneration.  That you run away in fear and are unable to speak when confronted by the snake in the dream, indicates that you are refusing to acknowledge the potent power within yourself that the snake represents. Do not run from or be silent about the changes occuring in your waking life; the transformation that is underway brings knowledge and renewal.
