home sweet home

Home Sweet Home by Elizabeths Designs
Home Sweet Home (Elizabeth’s Designs)

I was in an unfamiliar house in England. It was very long and large and located in an upper-class suburb. I do know that I was visiting the new house of the family I was nanny for in England (although this is nothing like the house they live in now which is an ancient mansion).  It was years later and the children were grown. I think I was with the current ‘nanny’.
Someone was trying to get into the house and we were a bit worried. I rang the emergency number but didn’t know the address of the house I was in. Not knowing the address or where we were, disturbed me;
really disturbed me.
This is a typical nightmare for me.  Another version is that I don’t know where I live so I don’t know how to get home. My mind is a complete blank. It really freaks me out. In some of my older dreams, I manage to find my way ‘home’ to the house that I lived in until I was fourteen… Someone else is living there and they do not know me. This also really upsets me.

Previously I have likened a house or building to the mind of the dreamer but I think in your dreams, the home is a metaphor for your identity. Not knowing the address of the house is akin to not knowing who you are; hence the ‘disturbed’ emotional response to the dream.

A quick look at your astrological chart shows Neptune and the moon in Scorpio in your first house. Emotional security is central to your identity but you lack trust that your needs will be met. Just when you think you know who you are – or, as in the dream, where you’re at – it disappears.

Take note of what is happening in your life when you have these dreams. Likely, something is occurring that is making you feel insecure and your subconscious mind goes searching for an anchor. These anchors are often in the past and for you, they are related to home, family and a sense of belonging.

The recurring dream is set in different locations that have at various times been your home. In the recent dream, you visit the new home of your ‘nanny’ family. In this instance your role is clear and you know the people but the environment is unfamiliar. In the older dream where you return to your childhood home, it is upsetting to be unknown in a familiar environment. There is always discord, a rupture.

Your subconscious is bringing your inner search for a strong sense of self identity to your waking attention. As the dream is recurring, this is a key part of your life’s journey.

I used to have this nightmare regularly from the time I was a child right through until my 40s.

It is dark and I am walking alone. I hear steps behind me. The steps start to go faster and faster until they are running after me. I try to scream but nothing comes out.

One night though, I actually did scream, waking my partner at the time and his deaf mother. It was a blood-curdling scream.

I hope now that I have told you about it I don’t start having it again.

I have just realised that the nightmare stopped when I started doing volunteer work with a charity. Perhaps the training gave me some sort of confidence that I lacked?

When I was little, I thought I was certainly second-rate to my brother and was sent to my grandparents most weekends. I felt I was a very disruptive person and that I had to prove myself. Sad but true!

I know it was a nightmare at the time but what a great dream. Many of us had recurring dreams during childhood that hold important clues for our adult destiny.

It is interesting that you made the connection between this dream and your relationship with your brother. Was he older than you? Did you feel that you were expected to ‘follow in his footsteps’?

Being in darkness implies that you are lost. You don’t know where you are and are unable to get your bearings. On the other hand, it is easier to hide in the dark so perhaps it was a safe place for you, a place where you wouldn’t be noticed…

Hearing only the sound of the ominous footsteps getting closer and closer must have been terrifying. And not being able to call for help – yikes!

It is amazing though that the dream stopped when you started volunteering. It is as if the footsteps chased you to your destiny of helping others. Valuing your kind and compassionate nature and recognising that you had something special to offer the world, you finally did ‘prove yourself’.

No more running. You found your voice.

As for the blood-curdling scream, there is a sleep disorder called sleep terrors (or night terrors) that is a recognised medical condition but I don’t think it would apply in your case. Were you under a lot of stress at the time?

dolphins or dollars

I am standing at a counter, possibly a shop and a lady approaches me and asks to see my hands.  The lady was young, about 20, with long dark silky hair that was particularly shiny. Her features were fine and delicate, like porcelain.

The lady takes my right hand and forms the fingers into the shape of a dolphin and tells me it is drawing me to the sea. She then takes my left hand and begins to stroke it from the wrist to the tips of my fingers and says ‘This one you know is worth a million dollars’.

I ask her why that is and she says ‘This you most surely know’.  The lady then leaves and I find myself back at home feeling very confused.

A recurrent dream is your subconscious expressing its exasperation. There is something you are missing or ignoring. The issues that trigger the dream are ongoing and unresolved. The dream is likely to continue until you make the necessary changes in your waking life.

The young lady is shiny and new and precious. Your younger self is speaking to you. She is confident and sure of what she wants from life. You can draw from her youthful wisdom to help with the choices you make today.

Her message ‘This you most surely know’ is because you already know the answers at a subconscious level. Your conscious mind is recalcitrant; hence the recurrence of the dream. Once you ‘get’ the message the feeling of confusion will be gone.

Generally, the right hand is more active than the ‘sinister’ left hand. The traditional distinction between the right hand and left hand paths seems to be reflected in the message the young lady offers for each hand. Your path is in your hands – you have everything you need at your fingertips.

The right hand path is associated with spirituality, universal moral codes, worshipping and merging with deity. The key to this path for you is symbolised by the dolphin – a beautiful animal associated with intelligence, freedom and playfulness. Visit Shamanism Working With Animal Spirits for further clues on the message from the dolphin.

(And just as an aside, I love, love, love that website. Often a particular animal will keep appearing to me – in living form, in advertising, in a song lyric. When it happens, take notice – an important message is being communicated to you. Most recently, owls have been with me offering wisdom as I face my shadow self.)

But back to the dolphin… I suspect that it’s been a while since you’ve been to the beach. Go to the ocean! Breathe in the sea air, listen to the waves, feel the cool water on your skin and the sand underfoot. It will help you find the answers you seek.

On the other hand…

The left hand is associated with earthy goals, an individual moral code, and the self becoming deity. The million dollars that your left hand is worth is perfectly in keeping with the more material aspects of this path. But there is much in this world that is more valuable than money. What do you value? The phrase ‘one in a million’ springs to mind… What is special about you? How have you used your individual gifts in the world? Recognise your unique self and celebrate.

As always, I’d love some feedback from the dreamer as your personal relationship to the symbols are the best guide for interpretation.

And fellow dreamers, please post a comment if you have any thoughts on possible interpretation of the symbols – the dolphin, your thoughts on right and left, or anything else.
